You can get a far superior frequency response with a good set of 6.5 inch circular speakers and enough power to them than with any subwoofer in this car. The big complication when upgrading an amplifier in this car is that the stock speakers are all 2 ohm parts whereas most aftermarket power-amplifiers cannot safely output to speakers of less than 4 ohm resistance. I would remove it and reuse the mounting position for the new amplifier and just ditch the plastic cover. A power amplifier expects and can only work with a line-level signal. This is the level of analog audio that 75 ohm RCA cables are designed to carry. It is true that there is only one power amplifier in the car, and that in the cars equiped with 'Beats' or 'Alpine', that one power amplifier is in the trunk on the passenger side. Of course there's nothing to stop you from replacing the factory head with an aftermarket unit.Some bad info here. I understand there are aftermarket amps that can accept low inputs but all models he carried expected outputs from the stereo's amp. In order to use the aftermarket amp (mounted under the seat) we had to leave the factory non-Beats amp in place. On mine, the tech noted that the factory stereo head doesn't contain an amp.
